Can you talk about Erasure w/o mentioning Yazoo?

A few days ago I droned on about how wonderful erasure and Vince Clarke really are. Well, a few days later, my love for all things Clarke has regressed back a few more years to 1982 and 1983 and I'm now ready to tell you that you must go listen to his earlier band, Yazoo (Yaz in America!)

Yaz was a duo comprising Vince and the mega-talented vocalist/songwriter Alison Moyet. I think they would both be impressed to see how I properly used the word "comprising" in the previous sentence. Many folks would have typed "a duo comprised of" and that's not correct.

Anyway, in only two albums they released some of the best songs of the 1980s - "Situation", "Don't Go", "Nobody's Diary", and their classic "Only You".

Once the two went their separate ways, Alison recorded about five records, starred in stage musicals, had kids, came out of the closet, and (for most of the '90s), was kinda hot. Here she is singing one of my favorite Yazoo songs which she remade for her 4th solo album, "Essex."

Erasure is 'effing FANTASTIC!!!

You know what, all throughout the 1980s and the first half of the '90s, Erasure was almost the greatest band around! They may have only had three hits in America ("Chains of Love", "A Little Respect", and "Always") but most critics and dancehall denizens caught on to them early and gave them their props. Then, in the latter half of the 1990s and early 00's, they kinda went astray. They were never terrible, but albums like their self-titled effort and "Loveboat" just didn't impress like they used to.

But you know what? The last three years have brought about an Erasure renaissance! "Nightbird" from about two years ago was easily the best thing they had done since "Chorus" in 1990/1991 and ranks in their top three CDs ever. Earlier this year, they released "Light at the End of the Tunnel" which also blew me away. I don't know how these boys are still writing songs this good! Vince Clarke is still a techno-pop gawd at the top of his game! Don't believe me - check out "I Could Fall in Love with You".

You'll come around!
