Infinite Crisis!
20 years ago, DC Comics tried to streamline their different "universes" in the limited series "Crisis on Infinite Earths." You see, they had numerous dimensions where different characters lived, and to some evidently, it was confusing. The end result of "Crisis" was one single Earth which was made up of pieces of the various universes. Not everyone made the transition though - as the series' tagline promised: "Worlds will live. Worlds will die." Also marked for extinction were the Silver Age Flash (Barry Allen) and Supergirl, amongst others. As a 14 year old, I was completely caught up in the excitement of seeing hundreds and hundreds of DC characters all in one book. It was fantastic!!
As we prepare to wrap up 2005, DC has released issue #1 of a new limited series called "Infinite Crisis", and the excitement generated by this new series matches or blows away that of the first one! I think the goal of this series is the less-specific "define the DC universe for the next generation" but that's OK. I don't insist upon a well-written mission statement for each of my comics. I would rather sit back and let the story unfold without having it ruined by spoilers or advertising information.
And the coolest thing of all is that Geoff Johns' incredible story, combined with my failure to mature over the past twenty years, has resulted in me being massively psyched by this book! That past year has been a great one for DC as they made it clear that they are the authority on superhero comics, and for the next six months, it's just going to keep getting better!
To the batcave!!!!
